The new recycling scheme seems to be going well. All bins should now have been delivered, and I am told that the tonnage yield looks good (although it is syill early days.
I have come across a few frequently asked questions:
Can I get another recycling bin, or do I have to share? The bins were allocated on an estimate of what each household would need. When we were doing the consultation, many people were concerned that there would be too many bins. Yhe sharing of one bin between two flats was considered the best solution. However, if you feel you need another recycling bin, you can ask for one by phoning 020 8937 5050.
What do I do with the old green box? Whatever you like. Brent Council suggest re-use _ perhaps as a planter or simply general storage. If you don't want to re use it, you can phone the Council to take it away.
Can I put shredded paper in the new recycling bin? Yes.

I wonder if you're living in the same Brent as the rest of us! I can tell you that many local roads where I live had NO collection at all on the allocated days, and there's rubbish blowing around freely as a result of overflowing bins. Our blue and green bins were supposed to be done on Wednesday 5th and still haven't been collected. And, the shared house next door to us has only one blue bin and no green ones. So, their rubbish is everywhere. I think you need to walk or cycle round and see what is really happening, rather than relying on Veolia. Even the staff on the bin lorries say it's been a fiasco. I'm quite sure you won't allow this to be published, as it doesn't fit your worldview, but you need to see what's really going on.
It was chaos on my street during last week's collection day, despite the council going to the expense of the leaflets and calendars attached to the bins when they were delivered, and advertising heavily in the loss making (if local newspaper reports are to be believed) Brent Magazine there were still so many people confused about which bins to put out, what they can put in what bin, etc. etc. Oh and the complaints about how they had "forgot" to empty one of the three bins..... I guess I've lived long enough to know better, but I still get surprised at how ignorant some people really are.
A few related questions:
1) Can a house that has its own recycling bin also request a second one if it needs it? (Given that we can recycle more items but the collection is only every two weeks)
2) When we put shredded paper in the new recycle bin can we still put it in a carrier bag first (preferred), or does it need to be loose (greater risk of flying around on a windy day when the lid is open)
3) Cardboard can now be put in the new recycling bins, is it still okay to also put it in the green organic waste bins (which are collected weekly) if one gets a large delivery etc.
4) I think shoes, batteries and a few other items are supposed to be left next to the recycling bin rather than in it. Is that not going to lead to a lot of street litter on a windy day? Will the plastic bags we have to put them in be recycled?
5) When will we be able to recycle plastic carrier bags via our recycling bins
6) Is the council getting paid for all the recyclable materials it delivers, or is it having to pay for them to be taken away (in net terms if you put landfill and organics to one side)
