Brent's Fairtrade Failure

Brent Council has failed to achieve Fairtrade status largely because of lack of engagement by Brent Schools. The attempt to get Brent Council to sign up to Fairtrade dates back almost a decade _ to when my Kensal Green predecessor Peter Lemmon was Mayor. It is one of those policies that the Tories in particular hate but don't have the guts to get rid of explicitly. Hopefully, the new elections will enable a renewal of energy so that Brent can limp in as one of the last Boroughs to attain Fairtrade status.

I remember when our councillor Peter was supporting fair Trade, he was really enthusiastic about it, he met with Mariaska at Roundwood Lodge and she took on Fair trade and used the companies he recommended.

She was so happy to be doing that, spreading the word as she does about those things and as Cllr Powney says it was nearly a decade ago, 2002 I believe. Since then we have a dismal attempt from Brent, however the new Deli in Chamberlayne road is using Fair trade tea and Coffee and is a social conscious employer, and training adults with learning difficulties to run a deli. So at least we have two, who made the effort and the energy to do what is right
