The LGiU has a
blog asking whether there is a need for a "middle tier" to supervise schools, and whether local authorities should do the job. The answer to both questions is surely yes. Central government simply doesn't have the resource to supervise more than 24,000 schools effectively. The policy of hollowing out local authority powers whilst leaving them with responsibilities simply means that necessary jobs, like providing school places do not get done.
