High Speed Link Through Old Oak Common

It looks as if the Tories are accepting both the need for the high speed rail link to Birmingham and the route using Old Oak Common. If so, that could mean a major regeneration opportunity for the area around Willesden Junction, including Harlesden Town Centre.

Professor Sir Peter Hall, Bartlett Professor of Planning and Regeneration, at UCL has commented:
“Old Oak represents a sensational urban regeneration opportunity – the 2010 equivalent of Canary Wharf in 1980. Currently a forgotten wasteland, it will soon become one of the greatest transport interchanges in Europe, based on easy links between London’s two new rail lines – Crossrail and Orbirail – and the new High Speed Two line from the Midlands and North to London and on to mainland Europe.”

Work on HS2 is unlikely to start until 2017, but the impact of this is likely to start being felt once the go ahead and route has been firmed up, which may happen next year.

GLA has now announced its support for Old Oak Common station. Great to see support building at a recent conference in West London, even in the current economic climate.
